Widden Primary School

Foreign Languages - Spanish

At Widden Primary School, children aspire to become global citizens who embrace and appreciate different cultures, languages, and perspectives. We believe that learning a foreign language broadens children’s horizons and provides them with essential tools for communication in an increasingly interconnected world.

Achieve
We are committed to providing every child with the opportunity to succeed in their language learning journey. Our Foreign Language curriculum ensures that children develop a strong foundation in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Through engaging and purposeful lessons, we aim to build children' confidence, enabling them to use the language with enthusiasm. Our goal is for children to achieve a lasting appreciation for languages, ensuring that they are equipped with confidence and practical skills for their future language learning.

Resilience
Learning a foreign language can be challenging, and at Widden Primary School, we view every challenge as an opportunity for growth. Our Foreign Language curriculum fosters resilience by encouraging children to persevere through new language concepts and vocabulary, building confidence through regular practice and repetition. We promote a growth mindset where mistakes are seen as a natural part of the learning process. Through supportive teaching and a positive learning environment, children are encouraged to try new things, embrace challenges, and feel proud of their progress, no matter how small.

Progressive
Our Foreign Language curriculum is designed to be progressive, ensuring that children build on prior knowledge year after year. We introduce foundational language skills at the start of Key Stage 2, progressively increasing complexity as children’s abilities grow. The curriculum is structured to allow for a gradual development of speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills, with increasing levels of fluency, confidence, and creativity. This progression ensures that by the time children leave our primary school, they have the confidence to continue learning a new language in secondary school.

Community
At Widden, we believe that language learning is most effective when it is connected to real-world contexts and the wider community. Our Foreign Language curriculum fosters a sense of community by encouraging children to engage with the world beyond the classroom. We aim to create a supportive and collaborative classroom environment where children work together, share ideas, and celebrate the diversity of not only the language we are learning but also the different cultures within the school and beyond.

Diversity
We celebrate diversity through our Foreign Language curriculum by learning about different traditions, customs, and ways of life. We want our children to develop a deeper understanding and respect for the world around them. The learning of a foreign language not spoken by the majority of our children brings our many different backgrounds together on one level playing field.

Equity
We are committed to providing an equitable learning experience for all children. Our Foreign Language curriculum is designed to be inclusive, ensuring that every child, regardless of their background, needs, or abilities, has equal access to language learning.

Every child deserves access to a high quality Foreign Language education, providing support and challenges tailored to their individual needs. Through scaffolding, hands-on experiences and inclusive learning opportunities we ensure that all children regardless of background or ability can succeed and develop a passion for learning foreign languages.
